Budgie wont play!

Question
Hello Chyrs Meatyard,

I purchased my budgie bird 11 days ago at a Pet store. I'm going to refer to my budgie as a he.  He is between 3/4 months old.  His eyes are still black and he has lots of bars on his head.  I think he is going thru his first molt ( more yellow is showing on it's head.
His name is Rasta!  Anyways, I have accomplished finger taming him and he comes willingly. He eats fine (loves millet spray) and his poops are regular.  My disappointment is that he doesn't play with his toys( i purchased the same ones that were in his cage when i bought him)He also just sits on his perch inside the cage. He ruffles his feathers from time to time and whips his tail. He stretches his wings and legs.  Is there something wrong with my feathered friend? Or do I need to give him more time?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thank you

Answer
Hi, Janet.  Thanks for posting your concerns.  Your budget/keet is still very young.  Give him (or her) some time.  It hasn't been long since he moved into your home and is probably still a bit frightened of his new environment/surroundings, including his toys!  S/he probably doesn't know what the toys are yet and/or what they are supposed to be used for, but s/he'll soon figure them out.  In addition, some birds don't like the toys we pick out for them, so you might want to try different types/a variety of toys, watch which toys your bird prefers, and remove the ones s/he doesn't seem to care for (introduce these later on when you rotate toys).  Budgies/keets love swings, toys with rings, toys with mirrors, toys they can climb on/up/through.  They don't seem to show much interest in toys that are designed just to be chewed on.  Be creative and invent some toys yourself out of safe materials you have around the house (avoid string, chains, or toxic material).  Things like an empty tissue box (s/he might chew on the cardboard which is OK), hollowed out small log, stick placed vertically in the cage, etc.

As far as just sitting on his perch inside his/her cage, it doesn't sound like anything is wrong with your young pet.  If s/he isn't playing with toys yet and doesn't have a companion bird to play with, there's not much else to do except sit and take in the world.  Things will change as s/he learns and grows older.  This is where you come in....you need to interact/play with your bird as often as you can when you are home if you want to have a tame companion pet bird.  After a while of doing this, your budgie will very much look forward to when you come home and your play time together.  I recommend leaving a radio or TV on in the bird's room when you are away during the day in order to help keep the bird company.

If you have more questions, please let me know.
