Hello my questions are that i have 4 birds 3 parakeets and a cockatail for the past days i heard sneezing sounds and there is alot of scratching and feather preening going around is this normal? 2 of the parakeets i reccently bought like 2 days ago have the same behavior only 1 of them dont do much she stands there and moves only to eat and drink, preen, groom the other parakeet, and tries to sleep often. Any suggestion and how much you think a cost to the vet for all of them would cost?

Hello Kayman, thank you for your questions,

Preening and scartching are normal behaviers but if they are scartching alot then they may have mites. The new birds if you've only had them for a few days will be still quite scared of the move and will not act quite them selfs right away, babies sleep offen maybe the sleepy one is a baby? If they are snezzing alot they may have a cold, if the scaratching/snezzing seems to get any worse or is just the same as it is now within a few days I'd reccomend a vet trip for the whole group including the cockatiel because things pass from bird to bird even if they don't live in the same cage. I can not tell you how much a vet trip would be but I do know in canada a vet trip for one bird of any type is 54$ plus gst but in the states it would be about half that, discounts are given when you bring three or more in, I belive here you get 14$ off each. Good luck with your feathered freinds and feel free to email me again, I may be abe to help you better if you give me some more details.

Thanks I taken the liberty to monitor my birds and i came with these responses. I notice that the tail is twitching possibly whn they breath i dont know if this is normal behavior, there was the ocasional sneeze (2 sneezes), 2 of the parakeets are scratching each other and kissing, they all ate (my cocatiel eats alot), sleepiness in the new parakeets, yawning occcurs, they often streatch the wings. The new parakeets will sometimes play with toys sometimes the cockateil will too the original parakeet will play to ocaisionally (but not often). The 2 new psrskeet would nibble lovingly on each other neck and wing area affectionally. They preen and scratch alot.

Answer
Hello again, and your very welcome. I think its safe to say that a sneeze every now and then is fine as is an occisanal scratch, The sleepiness may be a sign of something wrong however, how old are your new parrakeets? I do know babies sleep more then adults but they also play alot when they are awake, maybe the cockatiel or other parrakeets are making the new ones uneasy and they are scared to touch the others toys/dishes?
