canary may be hurt

Question
I let 2 of my canaries fly free in my bedroom when I'm in the room. Today, my cat was in the room and I didn't know it. My declawed cat quickly got "Sunny" in his mouth. I screamed and he let go. The encountered lasted only a second. I checked the bird carefully and no apparent punctures. Since then, when he is stimulated by the other birds or by me he has normal behavior (maybe slightly agitated), but then he sits quietly and doesn't move around. Not normal for him at all. It happened 2 hours ago. He is in his cage and covered for the night now. Could he have a punctured air sac or some other internal injury? What are the symptoms of those conditions. How should I treat him in the morning? I have no avian vet in my area. I love my canaries and I'm sick about this.

Answer
Hi there,

Its a pretty scary thing getting nearly eaten by a cat, so he may well just be in shock. Canaries are prone to heart attacks, so some sleep will do him good.

Take him to a vet to get checked over in the morning if he is not himself by then.
