Question
Hello, I am getting a whitefaced cockatiel tomarrow, I have a peach faced lovebird now hes handfed the tiel will be too, They'll have different cages but I was wondering if I can take them both out at the same time for playtime? my lovebird should be used to other birds because his breeder had loads of love birds, kariakis, rossellas, poisun parrots, ring necks, two cockateils and budgies! should the tiel live in another room away from my lovebird for awhile tyo be sure hes healthy? if so how long?

Answer
Hi,

You will need to quarantine your new cockatiel from your lovebird for at least 30 days (you can read more about quarantine recommendations here: http://www.parrothouse.com/quarantine.html)

Lovebirds can be very aggressive by nature, so it is never recommended to "mix" them (either on the same playpen, cage, etc...) with other types of birds.  Lovebirds are fearless and have been known to try and take on amazons and even macaws!  The reason lovebirds can be so aggressive is because they are prone to being very territorial over their stuff, and they just have kind of bossy personalities in general. :) (We still love them though!) :) :)

With proper supervision, you can allow the birds both out of their cages at the same time, but sometimes birds will not stay where they are supposed to (especially if their wings are not trimmed), so supervision is key to keeping both of your birds safe and healthy.

I hope this helps.
