Pigeon beak turned up, any idea why?

Question
My first grade daughter has a large cage containing three pigeons in her classroom.  The pigeons are on loan from our local zoo.  The teacher noticed yesterday that the top beak on one of the pigeons is rouding upward.  The beak doesn't look to be swelled or cracked.  It just looking like the toe of a worn cowboy boot where it rounds up.  The pigeon looks to be puffing up which may indicate some type of injury.  Any ideas?  The teacher is calling the zoo tomorrow to report this.

Answer
When birds are loaned from zoo's, I personally think it is the worse thing that can be done. The bird is used to its own environment, then it is put in to an area that has children rushing by all day. I have known too many birds become so stressed that they get heart attacks and fret and injure themselves. I know it is good for the children and they do not mean any harm, but the it is still inevitable.

I would take the bird to an avian vet, I can't see the zoo rushing to do this, and the vet may trim the beak if it is causing a problem. Beaks continue to grow, and without seeing it, i can not say if it is damaged or grown like that, and to what extent. My concern would be that the bird can not eat properly and hence, starve to death. Allot of zoo's are reluctant to pay for treatment for, what they would consider, a small case. They tend to save their cash for bigger projects on rarer animals.
