Why does my budgie talk to himself?

My partner and I were wondering why our budgie talks to himself?  He can go for hours, quietly whistling and squawking to himself.

Hi,

Birds, especially small birds like budgies, lovebirds, cockatiels, etc.  spend much of their time chattering to themselves. I can't tell you exactly what is going through your bird's head (to determine why birds chatter), but usually males are more talkative than females (as a general rule)- so it might have something to do with attracting a mate.
