Question
hello, may i know an ideal thoroughbred hoof size? should the hoof be small or big? do small feet thoroughbreds run faster or the big feet ones do well in races?

Answer
HELLO ROHIT...THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTION...

Believe it or not...there is NO ideal size for a thorobred horse.
Generally, We as Farriers gauge size by body weight normally...and truly any breed
of horse for that matter.

Example...Most say 1000lb horses would wear an a #00 to an #0 hoof/shoe.
         A 1100lb horse.....#0 to a #1
         A 1200lb  "   .....#1 avg.
         A 1250-1300lb......#2 avg

And so forth. Most breeds (with the exception of Arabians) will have a toe length from
3 1/4" to 3 3/4" (riding horses)and a width around 4" to 5 1/4". That is usually the
"norm" for any saddlehorse reguardless of the breed.
Naturally there are exception according to body weight and size.

Size DOES NOT make them run faster, it is all conformation !! Blood lines predispose
many horses to speed and greatness...but bloodlines alone WILL NOT carry ability !!

In my lectures many times during "questions & answers", People will want to argue
that Bloodlines produces Greatness. WRONG!! IF THAT WERE TRUE...WE'D HAVE A PASTURE/BARN
FULL OF CHAMPIONS...

AS I LIKE TO JOKE: "IF your Grandfather was a President or Prime Minister, doesn't make you
one"!!!  Conformation and Disposition is what makes ALL HORSES athletes and champions.
The disposition and willingness to excell, try and desire to please. Conformation to get the job done.

Hope this helps you understand...And I've helped in some way!!

Best to You...
