Question
Do mini horses need shoes?

Answer
Hi Holly
My answer is "It depends". We farriers shoe horses basically for three reasons. Primarily to protect the foot, to enhance particular gaits and for theraputic/corrective treatment. If your mini would happen to fall into any of these criteria then my answer would have to be yes. If the type of work he is asked to perform is minimal and done in proper footing  (non-abrasive)then I don't feel he would need to be shod. But keep in mind that proper foot care is essential to  soundness. A regular trimming/shoeing schedule will help to insure the soundness of your horse. Hope this adequately answers you question.
