Question
How many hoof injuries are reported each year that require bandaging or wraping the hoof to keep it clean and or dry while healing?

Answer
Hello Pat...Thanks for your question. As far as "how many are reported",I don't believe that's a statistic that is widely known. Of course, if we are talking about just the sole of the hoof, most of the time it will be cover with a hospital plate or a pad. For both protection and to re-medicate the wound or problem.
As far as the hoof capsule it self...ANY injuries or
lacerations that include the coronary band, soft tissue and such has to be covered; mainly because of the problem of "proud-flesh" or lack of granulation to the wound. It will heal faster and insects won't be such a problem while the horse heals. After such time...it would be the judgement
of the Veterinarian or Farrier to when the client could just treat the wound "openly" with either drying agents or
continue to keep the wound moist or soft while the healing process completes.
If I can help or suggest anything else...let me know.
Thank you...
