Red Foot Tortoise care

Question
I just bought a baby redfoot...I thought I was well read ( i had cared for an adult redfoot for about a week - we found it wandering and reunited it with it's owner- and had a crash course in tortoise care during that time).

My main concern seems to be lighting.  I read online for heat to use a 100w spotlight...they only seemed to carry 90w, which seems to work for a 90-100 degree basking spot.  I think this is working, althought the little guy is pretty shy in his new home, and likes to hide in his rock cove most of the time.

I bought a 10.0 uva/uvb light, as was recomended by the tortoise specialist at the pet store.  The bulb burned out the 2nd day I had it, so I took it back.  They did not have another in stock, I'm waiting for a replacement now.  online, it says these need a special base, but the bulb was 25w, and the lamp said it takes up to 60w, so I didn't think it was a problem.  Do I have to buy a special lamp, or can I assume it was a faulty bulb? (or both!)  Also online, I see that a 10.0 bulb "should not be sold commercially" I guess for health reasons...

Do I need to use a 10.0?  what's the difference between that and a 5.0...the site I read this on was California zoo site, which also sells bulbs, but only to 5.0.

I've took her out in the sun yesterday, but didn't have the chance today (I'm working 10 hour days,..it's dark when I get home)How long is it okay to go without?  I can get another bulb from a different pet store (I bet) but if I put it in the same base should it be a problem? (I just bought the fixture)

I want to give her the best environment possible (and not break the bank any more than can be helped!) Any recomendations are appreciated!

(the aquarium is not screened, I know that can make a difference)

Answer
Hello. first let me say don't take the tortise outside in her tank to get sunned you will fry her. Second a 10.0 is too high this is fine for desert lizards but even for desert ttortises Real Torise Experts...people who have kept and bred them for many years say teh high uvb output bulbs damage there eyes and instead reccomend a 5.0 or 2.0. I reccomend using the Strip light fixture and the strip bulb they cover more area...from what you are discrbing I think you are using a heat lamp base and a uvb coil bulb.  They shouldnt be without there uvb for more then 2 weeks. The reptile bulbs are prone to being fualty I've had red bulbs, uvb bulbs & fixtures and spot light heat bulbs NOT work and they were brand new and I had to take them back. Everything else seems fine about how your caring for her. Best of luck with your new little buddy.
