Question
QUESTION: hey i'v bought 2 start tortoise..they are 1 1/2 year old..one is male and other is female...i want to know that how much they eat..and how many time i have to feed them in a day???

ANSWER: Hi Hemali,

If the tortoises are really only a year and a half old, they're immature and not old enough to sex yet, so you may not have a male and female at all.  Star tortoises are grazing herbivores--grasses, broad-leafed weeds, cactus--and shouldn't be fed more than once a day, about as much as they'll eat in 20 minutes.  However, since you live in their native habitat, it would be best for them to live outdoors as much as possible.  You can build an enclosure outside and plant it with grasses and weeds so they can graze naturally.  If you must keep them inside, make sure you have them set up properly or they won't do well, since star tortoises are fairly delicate.  They need a basking light, a good source of UVB, and water available at all times, along with a varied diet.

QUESTION: hey as if i have two tortoise one tortoise is very much fine and active but the other one is not at all active..he always sit quite and dont even walk and eat properly..what to do ?

ANSWER: I gave you some care information in the links above.  Read them over carefully and make sure you have your tortoises set up correctly in all aspects, especially temperatures and UVB lighting.  I can't help you with specific supplies because I don't know what is available in India.  Correct anything that isn't set up right, and if your tortoise doesn't improve you need to take it to a reptile specialist vet for diagnosis and treatment.  It may need treatment for parasites or there may be something else wrong with it.  It's also possible that it wasn't healthy when you got it, especially if it wasn't being cared for properly.  This is especially true if you bought them from a pet shop rather than a private breeder.  Most pet shops don't have any idea how to care for tortoises.

QUESTION: my start tortoise is not having food.i don't understand anything what to do?he is getting black day by day.i ask doc so he gave some medicine but i dont thing so he is recovering..i dnt wana loose him :( please help me :(

Answer
I'm afraid I can't help you anymore than I already have.  I'm not a vet, and even if I were, I couldn't diagnose the problem over the internet.  If your tortoise is turning black, something is seriously wrong and he needs immediate help from a vet who knows something about tortoises.  If you've taken him to a vet and were given medicine, then the vet should have given you a specific diagnosis and told you what the medicine was for.  If not, please go back to the vet and ask what is wrong with the tortoise; if he can't tell you, then ask that he help you find a capable vet.

You should separate the two tortoises immediately, in case the illness is contagious.  Make sure both enclosures are set up correctly!  Keep a very close eye on the healthy tortoise for any signs of illness.

If you just bought this tortoise, you were sold an unhealthy animal, and should complain to the pet shop where you got it.

I'm sorry, I wish I could help more.
