Question
I recently adopted a Russian Tortoise for my son.  He is 27 years old and came with his 3x5 pen and all his toys.  We have had him for 4 days and he has eaten very little.  He is about the size of a large bagel.  I feed him a hand full of mixed greens and he only nibbles at them for a minute and walks away.  I have left the greens in there all day hoping he will go back to them and does not.  He is active and does not seem sick.  Could it be the adjustment or could he be sick?

Answer
Tracey,      Yes absolutely he is adjusting. Give him a week to get to know the new space and smells, sounds. Keep offering him food. Talk to your son and find out exactly where he fed him in the pen and what his favorites are. You don't want to change to much of the behavior he is used to. They get very set in their ways. If you see him doing alot of digging make sure to ask him has he ever hibernated him before. It is that time of the year and if he is that would explain the not eating. They create gases when they are hibernating and if he has undigested food in his belly they can suffocate them. I think it is just an adjustment period. If you have any other questions by all means ask he has lots more years to go. Wait till summer you are going to have so much fun with him. Mine follows me around the yard eats all my dandelions...lol amongst some of the flowers I don't want her to. She has a baby pool. Great pet!!!!! Good- Luck, Tina
