Sugar Glider wont eat

Question
I recently purchased a 10 week old sugar glider. He is bonding to me very well and I have been able to get him to drink water but he wont eat anything. We have the dry glider pellets that we soak in some water first (the guy we bought him from said to do this) and I have been giving him apples. Im not sure how to get him to eat and Im worried that if he doesnt eat soon that he will die. Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Dear Cortny:

You are correct, these guys will not last long without eating.  I urge you to contact a veterinarian in your area that treats sugar gliders.  In the meantime, pellets and apples are an inappropriate and insufficient diet.  At the end of this message I will provide you a link to research diets, but until you get him to a vet, push fluids like Pedialyte, diluted Gatorade (1/2 water) and apple or white grape juice (diluted by 1/2 water).  You can also try some flavored nonfat yogurt and unsweetened applesauce.  If nothing else, try to get him to lick it off your fingers.  You can feed him fruits and vegetables along with the apple, cantaloupe, seedless grapes, mango, and papaya.  Oranges, strawberries and pineapple are a little high in citric acid and could cause him to get loose stools, so wait until he checks out okay before you feed these.  Also, peas, green beans, broccoli and carrots.  They also need protein, mealworms, chicken breast, and eggs are good.  Try pureeing some of this with the applesauce and yogurt and see if he'll eat it.

Then get him to a vet ASAP.

I hope he is okay.
