Male Sugar Glider.

Question
I have a male sugar glider who is about 1 1/2 years old. He has recently started making this barking and hissing noise on a constant occasion and acts as if there is something wrong with his male genetal area. He has a consistent diet and isn't neutered. I was wondering if this is abnormal for a sugar glider?

Answer
Hi, Heather.

No.  It is not normal for him to bark and hiss while he is urinating or cleaning his genital area.  It could be a couple of things.  I would get him to a qualified  exotics vet that treats sugar gliders.  My first thought is UTI or urinary tract infection which is treatable with antibiotics.  But you should really have him checked out right away.

My other concern is that you wrote that he was on a consistent diet.  Consistent just means he gets pretty much the same thing daily, it does not mean that he is eating a proper diet (one that consists of a staple mix, fresh fruits and vegetables, a protein source (eggs, chicken, insects) and calcium supplements every day.  I know of many sugar gliders that were on consistent but terrible diets.

If you need any further help, let me know.
