Adopting older Sugar Gliders

Question
We are considering getting at least two sugar gliders. While doing research I stumbled across a local couple selling an entire family of Gliders. Mom and Dad are 2 1/2 years old and the twin daughters are around 1. The dad is now neutered so no more kids. My question is about the bonding. Will this family of 4 bond with our family of 4 or have they been with this couple too long? I'm not against getting a pair of babies but saw this family of gliders in need. The couple are both working new jobs and don't have the time to devote to their gliders any longer. Do you think bonding would be a major issue?

Thanks.
Frank

Answer
Hello Frank,

This sounds like a great opportunity for you.  If the gliders are well socialized, they should get along with anyone.  This would be the ideal situation.  By socialized, I mean that the gliders are accustomed to being handled by different people.

Some gliders are hand tamed, but not socialized.  These gliders are handled solely by one or two humans.  They may need some time to adjust to new humans.  A week or two should be enough time for them to switch alliances.

If the gliders are not hand tamed, you might be in for a rough time.  It would take a lot of time and patience to bond with an entire family at once.  The bonding process in this case could take anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months.

I would suggest you ask the owners some specific questions about how the gliders behave.  Is there any way you can visit with the gliders before adoption?

Good luck, and let me know how it goes.
