Mother and Joeys

Question
We just rescued a pair of gliders from squalor conditions. They were living in their own waste, and feeding solely on trail mix. The air was so sick I couldn't breathe and I can't see how they could. Their fur is stained with nicotine. I think the female has a joey in her pouch but I'm not sure and I'm worried it could be dead if it is there. Do the females expel joeys if they die or do they stay in the pouch where they will have to be removed?

Answer
Kelsey,

I am so sorry your babies had to go through so much.  I am happy they are now with you.  First thing is to get some protein and calcium into them.  Give them eggs, chicken, yogurt, and calcium powder.  They also need fresh fruits and vegetables.  Please go to my website for more detailed diet information:  nc.sugar.gliders.googlepages.com.

I don't know about joeys being expelled from the pouch, but I would think that they would come out if they detached from the teat.  How big is the little bump?  The bump would be about the size of a peanut in the shell if the joey is ready to come out of the pouch.  If the joey is big enough, you should be able to feel it move if you touch the pouch gently.

I believe the gliders will be fine with proper diet and living conditions.  Please keep me informed.  Let me know if you have any other questions.  Good luck!
