Question
hi, i have a male glider and he is neutered (i also just got a female a few days ago), his cage smells awful, as soon as you walk in the room it stinks really bad i have bedding in the bottom of the cage that does not really help. when we went to the pet store to get another glider their cage does not stink and they have males and their males are not neutered and you can put your nose to the cage and it does not stink. they do not feed the sugar gliders at the pet store fruits and vegetables or meat, just pellets, i feed them  fruits, vegetables, and meat,  and sometimes mealworms. Does my gliders cage stink because i feed them fruits, veggies, and meat. i could not stand letting my gliders just eat pellets i fell so bad for the ones at the pet store. thanks for all your help.

Answer
Dear Jody:

You should not be feeding your sugar glider "meat" as in red meat.  I would stop that and it may help.  They also need more than just pellets.

Have you had your gliders vet checked recently?  You may want to check to rule out some sort of internal parasite.

Your glider should have a good staple mix, fruits, vegetables, a protein source (scrambled eggs, shredded chicken breast, or mealworms), calcium supplements and vitamins.  If you have not researched diets recently, you might want to research either The Pet Glider Diet, BML, or Suncoast Diet.

Are you cleaning your cage at least once every week?  You should remove any wood from the cage.  I stay with pouches that can be laundered and plastic or metal.  Wood absorbs urine and holds odors.  I'm sure the pet store just cleaned the cage when you went in.

I hope this helps.
