building a cage

Question
I want to get a couple sugar gliders and i am building the cage myself. To cover the sharp points of the vinyl-coated wire mesh where I've cut it, I have been putting small dabs of silicone sealant (100% silicone).  I was just wondering if this material could be harmful to sugar gliders, and if so, what would you recommend instead?

Answer
I just don't know about the silicone, but I see that some of the cage plans call for silicone or hot glue.  Most people use this: "8-foot plastic paneling end-capping trim (available in a variety of colors). Used to trim doorways to protect sugar glider and owner from sharp wire edges."
