Red Eyed Tree Frogs

Question
I am hoping to get 2 red eyed tree frogs, however, I am also getting a drum kit.  How are frogs with loud musical instruments. Should I reconsider?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
Hi Emily,

Frogs have a more developed sense of hearing then reptiles. They use sound to find mates and define territories.  Snakes tend to "hear" primarily through ground vibration and turtles/tortoises hear sound mostly in the lower frequency range. Hearing in frogs is actually a topic that is studied and they appear to hear sound (air vibration) from the low through to the high frequency range in addition to picking up ground vibrations.

So their hearing is pretty good but I don't know if there is any real data on how much sound/vibration they tolerate without becoming stressed. Tropical forests can be fairly noisy places at night. Lol, I think if any species could tolerate it then it would be red-eyes. They are also very solid sleepers during the daytime.

I'm sorry that I don't have a definitive answer for you. It is good of you to be thinking ahead to the welfare of your future pets. You may just have to observe them for signs of stress which would include darkened or splotchy colouring, lack of feeding  or disturbed sleep patterns  (being awake during the daylight hours).

This is an interesting article on hearing in frogs.
