UPS to ship a bearded dragon

Question
Hi Tracie,
I was just reading your response to Lynn and wondered if I could also get the information from you on shipping a bearded dragon UPS.  My son is stationed in California with the Navy and since he cannot bring him on a plane, we were wondering about shipping it.
Thanks so much!
Eileen

Answer
Hello Eileen,

I know, it is too bad they don't allow you to bring a reptile on the plane with you.  It is ridiculous really when they will allow small dogs, etc.
UPS is good with delivery.  You absolutely have to send him next day air, no doubt about it.  The box must be labeled LIVE ANIMAL on all 4 sides, it helps ALOT!!!!
The box should be packed well.  Use styrofoam to pack around a container fitted inside of the box, such as a plastic container like rubbermaid or a tupperware container.  You can poke a few airholes in the lid, but the container inside of the box should not allow him to move around much at all, & be sure to put his blankie in with him for comfort.  Then, just make sure the container is packed tightly to where it doesn't move around in case the box is jostled around a bit.  Put packing or newspaper or something not real heavy all on top just to make the box all filled up.
The whole idea is to confine him as much as possible in a small container that he can't move much at all, but, without hurting his tail.  The less room in the container means less space for him to slide around, etc.  Use your judgement on the size.
It is not real hot or real cold out now, so he should not need a hot or a cold pack so it is the perfect time of year to ship him.
You are shipping him within the US, right?  The cost does vary, but it shouldn't be anymore than $80 or so.
