Hi Tracie

We got a Zilla slimline desert fixture with a desert 50 uvb t8 fluorescent bulb and we got a reptitemp digital infrared thermometer.Also got a timer and a heat emitter so we are going with a 12 hour cycle.He seems to be eating fine.

Hello Jim,

The Zilla slimline Desert 50 tube bulb is not a good light, it will likely hurt his eyes.  It emits the incorrect wavelength of UVB, which is not conducive to D3 synthesis.  
The better UVB to get is either the Zoomed Reptisun 10 tube bulb or the Arcadia D3 12% tube bulb.  You can purchase either one of them from here:

The 12 hour cycle for day time & 12 hour night time cycle is fine.  
The digital infrared thermometer is perfect.  How are the temperatures now?
