Jungle carpet python

Question
I recently purchased a two year old JCP.  When I bought him, it was one day before his scheduled one week feeding.  I know it takes snakes a while to acclimate to a new environment (I've owned a few before), but I'm worried that he is so far off schedule.  I've had him for 5 days and he is fairly inactive and not interested in feeding.  He is also doing an odd mouth stretching behavior that I've never seen before.
Any suggestions/advice?
Thanks-
Sarah

Answer
Well there could be several reasons. What kind of cage do you have it in? Small snake in a big cage can become overwhelmed & stressed (i.e. not eat). Make sure there is an enclosed cage that allows for some climbing along with branches or perches. Not all carpets are inclined to perch but a majority of individuals will use perches if provided. Enclosure sizes of 36"x18"x24" is a good size for adult carpet pythons, and work very well for mature snakes. Remember that ALL enclosures must allow for a proper thermal gradient that the snake can utilize, with a very warm spot on one end and a cooler spot on the other. A lot of snakes don't eat as much in the winter. Do you have him on the same diet that he was on when you got him. Live or dead? Rat or mouse? Make sure you give him what he is used to. Snakes are picky eaters and they do not like change. Well I hope I helped some. Just give it some time. Remember, they can go for months without eating if they had to. Just make sure there is plenty of FRESH water available. If a month or so goes by and he still has not eaten, I would consult your veterinarian. Again, I hope I helped. Have a great day.
