Egyptian Uro eyes/lights

Question
Hi Tracie,

I was just reading the dialogue between you and Nolan about his Uro's eyes.

When I recently got Silver, his pupils were fine and I could see his eye color, a beautiful amber color.

Now his pupils are almost always dilated and half closed.

For daytime basking, I am using Zoo med basking spot lamp, 100 watts--makes it pretty warm in the cage...for the UV I have a Zilla 20 watt coil.

At night I have been using a 75-watt T-Rex 75 watt "R30 bulb" day and night Red Heat Lamp.

These were sold to me at the pet shop--I would not have known what to get.

I have a feeling I need to change this somehow-do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much!

Jennifer

Answer
Hello Jennifer,

Yes, you most definitely have to change it unfortunately.  The Zilla coil is a dangerous light.  The better choice for a UVB source is the Reptisun 10 flourescent tube.  No compacts or coils are recommended.
The Zoomed basking lamp, is it very bright?  If not, you should get a halogen light.  The basking temps need to be upwards of 120.
How close is the Zilla coil light from him?
The eyes are dilating & closing due to the fact that there is not enough bright light in the tank to help protect his eyes.  The Zilla light itself, emits low wavelength UVB which is close to UVC & is emitting basically, radiation which is harming him.  The eyes are not getting enough bright light, so the pupil stays dilated & does not constrict like it would with bright white light.
Go ahead & turn off that Zilla light when you get this message.

Let me know how he is doing.
