My Whites Tree Frog

Question
I purchased a Whites Tree Frog about two months ago. He is kept in a proper cage with three other tree frogs; a golden, a green and a gray tree frog. Last week I noticed a little lump on his back on the lower right side. This lump is under his skin, with no discoloration, and I think it may have gotten a bit bigger. I've read the other postings where you talked about oozing or scabbing lumps, but this is not the case. I just don't know if I should find an amphibian veterinary facility, let it be, or if there is something that I can do for him.
Thank You,
Christine

Answer
Hi christine, Whenever there is a mysterious skin lump on a frog, I tend to suspect a bacterial abscess first. Their permeable skin makes them much more prone to infection then reptiles. Your frogs first defense is his own immune system. You can help that to function optimally by keeping any stress to a minimum (including handling) and insuring that he has an adequate basking temperture.  Of course there are several other possible causes as well and an examination by a vet would be the only way to be certain of what you are dealing with. My personal rule of thumb is that if the abnormality appears to be getting larger then it is better to seek veterinary attention sooner rather then waiting until it is a more threatening (and expensive) situation.
