QuestionMY GECKO IS ABOUT 3 MONTHS OLD AND SHE USED TO EAT GOOD AND HAD A GOOD AMOUNT OF BODY FAT, BUT IN THE PAST WEEK I HAVE NOTICED HER GETTING VERY, VERY THIN AND HER TAIL IS EVEN THINNER ! I DONT THINK SHE IS EVEN EATING ANYMORE !!! I AM SO SCARED TO LOSE HER BUT THE VET IS NOT OPEN FOR TWO MORE DAYS ! MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN KEEPING THE LIGHT ON 24 HRS A DAY, I BELIEVE THAT IS BAD SO I TURNED IT OFF TONIGHT BUT IT IS ONLY 67 IN MY HOUSE, I THINK WE HAVE OVERHEATED HER BECAUSE SHE USED TO EAT AND LOOK GOOD. SHE DOES HAVE A PLACE TO GET AWAY FROM THE HEAT BUT IDK !!! PLEASE HELP ME !!! SHE LIVES IN A 10 GALLON FOR NOW, I SUPPLY HER WITH A LOG FOR HIDING, A WATER DISH, FORTIFIED LIVE KRICKETS (THAT SHE USED TO EAT JUST FINE).
AnswerHello Angie,
First of all, do you have an undertank heater for her? Or do you just use a basking light? If you do not have an undertank heater, she does need one of those on 24/7 as they digest food much better with belly heat in combination of overhead heat to get a hot spot on one end of 88-90.
The basking light can be turned off at night but leave the undertank heater on.
So she has a moist hide on the end where it is warmer to help with shed? At the cooler end, she just needs a half log as you have.
Are you measuring the temperature in there at all? You will need a digital probe to test the basking spot & hot end to make sure it doesn't get over 90 in there.
How are her stools? She may have parasites? The crickets could have been a bad batch unfortunately.
You are going to have to begin rehydrating her with water & pedialyte. Also, get some chicken or turkey babyfood to feed her through a plastic dropper or syringe by dripping it onto her nose, or getting it into her mouth by getting a swab to open her mouth & put the food in quickly.
