Question
QUESTION: my 2 year old veiled has lumps along his spine. does not affect him in any way. He is given supliments, has a full spectrum uv light changed regularily. I am just wondering if this was perhaps caused by MBD when he was younger or if it is just him. There is a lump that is on one side of his spine only, does not bother him to touch it.

ANSWER: Hello Carmen,

What type & brand of UVB light are you using, is it a flourescent tube bulb or a compact or coil light?
How often is he getting calcium?
Did he have metabolic bone disease when he was younger?
Lumps along the spine can indicate calcium deficiency yes. Is the spine straight or deviated in any way?
Do you give any vitamins at all, weekly?

QUESTION: Regaridnt the light, off the top of my head I believe it is 5.0, i do not recal the brand name. it is a coil light. he gets a mixture of calcium and vitamins on his superworms. He tends not to eat every day, only every other, so he would recieve vit/calcium every other day.

I do not know for sure if he had MBD younger as I got him at aprox 6 months old, but showed no signs of it visually.

His spine is straight which is why i am confused. his legs/joints show no signs of MBD. only along one side of his spine there are a two lumps. I tried touching them today and they feel soft and fleshy.

Answer
Hello Carmen,

Those bumps do need to be looked at though, it could be cysts of some sort but could be aspirated to determine if they are abscesses or just cysts.
As far as the UVB, the coil lights are terrible in terms to UVB emissions.  The UVB needs to be upgraded ok?
That best UVB is the Reptisun 10 flourescent tube bulb.  The problem with metabolic bone disease, is that it usually goes undetected for awhile until suddenly one day, they are not well.  They get sick slowly & they get well slowly.
If he does not have adequate UVB exposure, he will not absorb his calcium properly which in the long run, will lead to metabolic bone disease.
He only needs vitamins 1 time per week, but calcium 3 or so times per week.

Can you post a picture of him?
