Concerned about our leopard geckos

Question
Ok I have a Question we have 3 leopard geckos and we originally had a coconut fiber type of substrate for them, we had planted grass seed in it, because we were told that both the crickets that we fed the geckos and the geckos would benifit from it. Then we found out that the substrate may cause impaction, so we dumped that substrate and went with what people told us at the pet store, which is crushed walnut shells. But now were heariing that, this may cause impaction too. We heard about using newspaper, or paper towel as a substrate, but we wanted our geckos habitat to look almost like they were in there natural habitat. What would you suggest that we do? Also are the reptile mats any good I heard that they hold a lot of the odor from the urine, and eventually start to really stink. Please help, we need all the advice we can get.
Thanks for your time,
Kim

Answer
Hello Kim,

Those are great questions.  You are very wise to remove the loose substrates.  I am glad you didn't decide on calcisand, etc.
You can use reptile carpet which looks very nice but it does have the tendency to hold odor & moisture.  What we have also found to be successful is felt.  It is soft, nice looking & easy to clean & it looks natural.  There are all sorts of colors that you can pick from.
Some people have also used ceramic tiles, too which look nice.

Let me know what you decide.
