Question
Do crocodiles and alligators have tongues? And if they do, what do they use them for? I had heard that they toss their food to chew and swallow it, so what would be the purpose of a tongue?

Answer
Hello Megan,

Yes, crocodiles & alligators have tongues.  :-))
The purpose of their tongues in most of the species is to help excrete salt from their bodies with the help of salt glands.  There are some species that do not have the salt glands, but a lot of them do.
There is also a palatal flap which blocks the entrance of water to the lungs that is located on the back of the tongue.
They do chew their food by tossing it around in their mouth to eat.
I hope that gives you a little bit of information.
