broken toenail

Question
My rabbit just broke his toenail again.  Since I cannot take him to the vet until tomorrow, what do you suggest I do to help him.  I have some bene bac gel from the last time, but it expired in February.

Answer
Dear Allison,

Unless it looks really bad, you probably do not need to go to the vet at all. If the broken part of the nail is still hanging on, use some pet nail clippers, (or even human nail clippers could work)and carefully trim off the broken part. If at all possible, avoid cutting the quick, which is the vein which runs down into the toenail. If the rabbit has clear toenails, it would look pink in there. If the nails are darker, it is harder to see where the quick is, but if you hold a flashlight behind it you should be able to see its outline in there. If the nail is bleeding, or if you accidentally cut the quick, pour some cornstarch onto the nail. That should stop the bleeding. You may have to put on some fresh cornstarch a few times, but it should work.

I hope this helps!
God Bless
