Question
Hi,

I just bought 2 different rabbits from 2 diff pet shops.  One is lop and one is angora.

They r about 2 months old.

They can't get along.  Will they ever and how can I make them get along?

Answer
Dear Rose,

Bonding two bunnies can be a challenge!  Before anything will be a success, both parties must be spayed/neutered by a competent, experienced rabbit vet, which you can find here:

www.rabbit.org/care/vets.html

If the bunnies are too young (males can be neutered at the age of about four months, or when the testicles descend; females can be spayed at five months (earliest), though it's best to wait until 8 months so the estrogen can do its job helping form the skeleton properly), then they need to be kept separate, but within eyesight/smell of each other so they won't be total strangers.

You can find several helpful articles on how to bond bunnies here:

http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-a=00062824-sp00000000&sp-q=bonding

But in the meantime, DO NOT let them get into a full-blown fur-ripping fight.  Not only will you have vet bills (they have razor sharp teeth!), but they will often never forgive each other and be *very* hard to bond.

This is one reason we recommend that people interested in a pair of bunnies adopt a bonded pair from their local rabbit rescue organization. It saves you the grief of bonding, and also the expense of spay/neuter, since all House Rabbit Society bunnies are already spayed/neutered.  For more information, visit:

www.rabbit.org/

Your local HRS chapter representative may be able to help you with bonding the bunnies, and you can also find help by emailing to behavior@rabbit.org

Hope that helps!  Good luck!

Dana
