Question
Hi,
I have two dutch rabbits and I keep them outside. I was wondering if you could tell me what I need to do to prepare them and the cage for the winter.
                            Thanks,

Answer
It depends on where you are, and what the weather is like in the winter. In milder climates, nothing needs be done. In colder climates, you will need to be sure they are protected from the wind (adding a wooden box with hay and with a small opening into it will help them get out of the wind and keep them from getting too cold), given plenty of food to allow them to burn calories to keep warm (and plenty of good hay), and the water bottle will need to be changed to a water dish (if they don't already have one). You will need to check the water often to see if it is frozen, and it will need to be changed if it is. Rabbits need access to water at all times.

You can also put tarps over the cage, but only if the hutch has a hangover where it is possible to attached the tarp so that it is not within reach of the rabbits, as they will chew on it. The plastic in the tarp can cause problems if they eat it.

If the temperature really drops low, you will need to bring them inside for the night.
