Question
Hi Dana:  Thanks for the quick answer.  I want to try Ponazuril but is there a site that gives dosing information and or any history of the use and success rate for my vet.  He is very hesitant and had never heard of using it.  Any medical journals or web sites?  I have done searches online and not found anything.  Thanks again  Linda

Dana:  My vet would like more infor about treatmet with Ponazuril/Marquis for ec.  Can you tell me whee to find it?  Thank you LInda Thibault

Answer -
Dear Linda,

I LOVE Ponazuril.  It is fantastic against coccidia, and shows great promise in the treatment of E. cuniculi.

Unfortunately, it is still ungodly expensive, and can be bought only in horse-sized tubes that run anywhere from $150-200 (but will treat a whole bunch of bunnies).

You can find product information here:

http://www.bayerdvm.com/products/marquis/marquis.cfm?CFID=334458&CFTOKEN=2936973

and a place where you can buy just one tube (instead of a case of four!) here:

http://www.heartlandvetsupply.com/cart/product_info.php?products_id=750

I hope this helps get you started.  Good luck!

Answer
Dear Linda,

Unfortunately, the drug is far too new, and its use far too recent in species other than horses (the only species for which the drug is officially labeled) for there to be controlled studies involving anything but the target species.

We have been using it at a dose of 20mg/kg once per day.  If your vet reads the toxicity data from Bayer, he will find that the drug does not appear to have any significant adverse side effects.  We have seen none.  (And if your rabbit is dying from E. cuniculi, what have you got to lose?)

I would suggest that your vet subscribe to some of the online exotics vetererinary lists and talk to other vets about this drug.  There's a good deal of "off label" experimenting going on at the clinical level right now, and probably the best information he could get would be directly from those who are using Ponazuril now.

Wish I could be of more help.

Dana
