Hay?

Question
Hi. I was wondering if there was a clean way to offer timothy hay? Because usually I give it to my rabbits on a rack and it gets messy. Hay goes everywhere!!! Are there other ways to offer hay besides giving it to them on a rack? If not, then is there a rack out there that's less messy?

P.S. What are your opinions about Neat Ideas Cubes Condos for rabbits? (I was thinking about building one for my two rabbits)

Answer
Hi Vanessa,

hay is generally a pretty messy thing about rabbits.  It's one thing most people can't escape.

You can try to offer it in different containers.  For a couple of our guys, we offer it in old kleenex boxes.  However it still gets all over because they pick out the ones they want to eat and toss the others.

So even if you can initially contain it well, the rabbits themselves will move it around.  The one thing you can do to minimize throwing out too much hay they don't eat is to find a brand of hay they really like, so less will be deemed 'uneatable' by your bunny, and less will be tossed out by him as junk.

Some people put hay inside old toilet paper tubes and let the rabbits eat it out of there.  It also gives them something to toss.  If they eat the toilet paper roll it's no big deal.

As for the condo cubes, I know of people who use them and like them.  Seems that their rabbits have a generally favorable opinion of them.  Depending on the size of your rabbits you may need more to build them something to their size.
