grunting Rabbit

Question
My rabbit is 2 yr old she has all of a sudden started grunting when you stroke her and puffing herself up. She has also started to butt things away. There is no way she is pregnant. She had a litter around 1 yr ago. She has also started to wee a very orange colour. She has lived with her baby girl for the past yr and sometimes turns on her but just to warn her away.
Would getting her spayed help. She is eating and drinking fine and pooing ok

Answer
Hi Leanne

Spaying would definitely help her.  It could also prolong her life.  Rabbits that aren't bred regularly are said to have an increased incidence of ovarian cancer.  It will also help her to get along better with the other doe.  It is really rare that 2 doe's can live together when they aren't fixed.  I would be very concerned that she is showing aggression.  What seems like a warning today could be an all out fight tomorrow.

The orange urine is probably related to her diet.  Rabbits kidneys filter food in different ways.  They will often time have orange to red urine.  As long as you aren't seeing pure bright red blood then it is normal and don't worry.  If you have any concern that there is blood in the urine or can't tell then you would definitely need to take her in for a urinalysis.

I hope things work out for you.  She sounds so adorable.

Thank you

Pam
