Injured Paw - Limping

Question
My rabbit(a 1yr old lionhead) took a bigger jump than I think he expected and then instantly afterwards was holding up his right paw.
I checked it and there was the smallest amount of blood around his inside nail. He was then his usual self exploring and running about etc but wouldn't put weight on the paw and still kept holding it up.
He has broken a nail previously which bleed a lot more but he still used the paw, so I don't think it's just a case of a broken nail.
He seems ok in himself, he's eating and drinking ok at the moment, but just not using his paw as normal.
Can a rabbit sprain his paw??
Everyone keeps telling me I'm worrying over nothing, but I hate seeing him limping around and I'd hate it if he was in pain.
How long do I leave it hoping he improves before going to the vets??
The incident happened yesterday (1st may) at about 9 at night. It's now 6 in the afternoon the following day and he's still not using the paw as normal.

Answer
Dear N,

If there was a bit of blood near the base of his nail, he may have broken it beyond the quick (the pink part inside, which is homologous to the tip of your finger), and it will continue to be painful until it grows out.  I would get him to a good rabbit vet:

www.rabbit.org/vets

to see if the nail is broken in a spot where it can be removed so it doesn't move and hurt him every time he puts weight on his foot.  If the bone is broken, the vet may wish to gently wrap and stabilize the paw so that bun doesn't injure it more severely by accidentally bumping it or using it.

I'm sure this isn't life-threatening, but he should definitely be seen by a good rabbit vet if he's still not using his paw normally by tomorrow.

Hope this helps.
