Question
My little rabbit was infected by e. cuniculi and has cataracts, I would like to have more information about eye surgery to remove it. He is 10 years old. Thanks for your attention, Lucia.

Answer
Dear Lucia,

Cataracts can be caused by many things other than E. cuniculi, and the lens lesions caused by this parasite are of a very specific nature.  Was this diagnosed by a veterinary ophthalmologist who is very experienced with rabbits, and knows the difference between E. cuniculi-caused cataracts and other types of lens damage?

You need to be very sure that the retina is functional, and that there are no other pathologies going on in the eye that might damage vision before you opt for this very expensive surgery.  Removing a clouded lens will restore his sight only if the rest of the eye is in working order.  At your bunny's age, this is something you want to approach with caution.

I'd suggest you consult with your rabbit-savvy vet about seeing a veterinary ophthalmologist who is also experienced with rabbits.  S/he can help you make the right decision for your bunny.

I hope this helps.
