white spot on eye

Question
I just noticed a white spot appearing on my mini rex's eye. It is not a perfect circle and it is opaque. It appears to be inside the pupil of the eye.  It does not look like it is on the top surface of the pupil but rather inside of it.  Nothing has changed in diet or location of the bun and she has no other symptoms.

Answer
Dear Kim,

Without seeing it, I can't say what the lesion is.  It could be a corneal ulcer, or it could be a growing cataract.  In either case, it should be examined by an experienced rabbit vet:

or--preferably--by a veterinary ophthalmologist who has experience with rabbits.  (A mammal eye is a mammal eye; if the vet ophthalmologist will agree to see a rabbit, that's the route I'd take.)

The causes of cataracts and corneal ulcers are various, and treatment will depend on the source of the problem.  So the sooner this is properly diagnosed, the sooner treatment can begin so things get better, not worse.

Hope this helps.
