Is my newly found rabbit a pet or wild rabbit?

Question

Elfie
Hi, I'm hoping you can help me figure out if my rabbit is a pet or maybe a cottontail.  We rescued him from a group of kids who were running around with him. They said they found him under a car.  He is quite tame and took to his new cage right away.  If he is a wild rabbit i would feel bad keeping him locked up.  However if he's a pet, we would love to keep him.  Thank you for any advice.

Answer
Dear Lynne,

Elfie is a domestic bunny, probably a dwarf hybrid.  He's very cute!  I'm very happy to tell you that he would *not* do well in the wild, and should become your newest family member.  You can see pictures of wild cottontails here:

Cotties are a reddish-agouti color, have much longer, pointier muzzles and are very wild and nervous.  They almost never allow you to touch them.  So Elfie is certainly a domestic Oryctolagus cuniculus, not a wild Sylvilagus floridianus.  :)

Our rabbits are never caged.  They are spayed/neutered, litterbox trained, and the most wonderful companions you can imagine.  Very intelligent, social and loving.

I hope you have a wonderful time with Elfie!  You can find a good vet to give him a wellness check here:

Good luck,
