Question
i am having a crisis with a bunny that i actually found in a trash bag when i was helping a friend move.  i have had him since april 2007, and it seems that he may not be defecating and/or urinating for a few days.  i am experiencing my own crisis at this time due to illness, and am not able to pay the $250 + that it would take to diagnose, blood work, x-rays, etc.  i am looking for someone (rescue organization), that can help me free of charge, or someone to adopt him and get him help.  He does not seem to be in any distress at this time, but he also does not eat or drink. I do not want him to suffer, but i cannot afford the medical care, as i did not choose to buy him, i simply saved his life from some sick, cruel, disgusting person.  PLEASE HELP!!! I DON'T WANT HIM TO SUFFER......   MAYBE IT IS JUST A DECREASE IN GI MOTILITY AND SOMEONE CAN RECOMMEND SOME HOME REMEDIES.  THANK YOU SO MUCH... MAY GOD BLESS YOU!!!PLEASE  CALL ME AT 401-265-6065 ANY TIME DAY OR NIGHT.  IF I DO NOT ANSWER, PLEASE LEAVE ME A NUMBER WHERE I CAN REACH YOU.

Answer
Dear Lou,

Please read this immediately:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html

There are a number of things you can do at home to improve his motility, and the most important is gentle abdominal massage, as described in the article.  Please read the article completely for all the things you can do to get bun's GI tract moving again and get him to start eating.

You can contact your local rabbit rescue chapter here:

www.rabbit.org/chapters

for help locating a low cost vet, or other assistance.  I hope there is someone near you to help. But the bunny definitely can't go on like this without medical attention.

I hope this helps get you started.
