Can rabbits have fleas?

22 9:50:01

Question
We have had Stormy a cute black rex for about 6 months. We also have 2 other female bunnies that are friends and reside together. We just got a lop-eared boy, he is the cutest thing. My boyfriend just loves these rabbits and feels a special bond with 'Thunderfoot' his new little boy. We have a large greenhouse that has a divided area where we let the bunnies play. It is so fun to watch them do 'blinkys' But just yesterday when my boyfriend picked up Thunderfoot to take him to play he immediately claimed something was crawling on him. I looked & saw nothing. He said it felt like it was at first on his neck then face and then his ear. When I picked up Stormy I felt them same sensation. Both bunnies seem fine, eating, pooping, no crust on their ears & no excessive scratching or fur pulling. We clean their cages regularly and have not introduced any new foods. Could this be fleas? Neither of us could see anything but the speed with which the sensation moves is disturbing. Please help. Oh and when should we neuter Thunderfoot he is 5 months old.
Thank You

Answer
Hi,

yes, rabbits can get fleas.  I would confirm that this is what he exactly has, by going to your good regular rabbit vet.  They will tell you which flea products are safe for rabbits.  The ones like Frontline are deadly to rabbits, the vet will tell you what products are safe for rabbits.

I'd take both in actually because the vet will probably want you to treat both, as they'd just migrate over to your other rabbit as they are in the same house.

He or she could also tell you if Thunderfoot has hit sexual maturity so that he can safely be neutered.  Generally rabbits hit sexual maturity around 3-6 months of age, and the boys tend to want to hump your arm or feet, may try to spray you (to mark you as theirs).  You can also see testicles sometimes under their tails (not always as they can pull them back inside).

But I'd say take both in, discuss the flea issue and the neuter issue.  They need wellness checkups once a year anyway.  Anytime you get a new pet you should take them in pretty quick to make sure there aren't any medical issues under the surface.
