Question
Hi,
My rabbit is about 6 years old. we got back from vacation recently, and she has stopped eating frequently as she used to. She also has a runny substance coming out of her eyes. This has never happened before. I am very worried. CAn you help me?

Answer
Dear Allegra,

Runny eyes in a six year old rabbit can be caused by various things, including:

1.  blocked tear duct due to mild bacterial infection in the duct itself.

2.  blocked tear duct due to cellular debris buildup (a tear duct flush will clear this)

3.  blocked tear duct due to molar or incisor root problems (this is more common in rabbits over 5 years of age).

for a complete explanation.  I would recommend you get your bunny to a good rabbit vet ASAP, since if the pain of her problem is already causing her to lose her appetite, it could become worse without prompt diagnosis and treatment.  You can find a good vet here:

She may also need to have her molars filed, if there are spurs.  More information on this can be found here:

I hope this helps!
