Fleas on 5 month old Dwarf Netherland

Question
QUESTION: My 5 month old (born April 17, 2010) bunny has some fleas.  What is best to use on her, that is safe for bunnies, and, how much to use, etc.  I am thinking that 5% seven dust might be safest, but am not certain.

ANSWER: Dear Marlene,

Sevin dust is *nasty* stuff, and I would not get it near the bunny.

Instead, get to a good bunny vet:

www.rabbit.org/vets

and ask about Revolution (selamectin), which will kill the fleas for 3-4 weeks, and also take care of any mites that might be in residence.  Advantage is also safe, but DO NOT use Frontline (fipronil), which is deadly to rabbits.

I hope this helps.

QUESTION: Can Advantage be used on a rabbit only 5 months old?  If so, what dosage for a Netherland Dwarf.  I am a widow living on Social Security, and cannot really aford a couple of hundred dollars for a Vet to tell me what to use for fleas.  I used to have a good Vet that was in the business to help animals, and did not charge some outlandish price for simple advice, but he passed away a few years ago, and apparently the majority of Vets are now in the business to make money and could care less about the animals they treat.  I know a prescription is required for Revolution, and a Vet would probably charge me a couple of hundred dollars to give me that. I know that 5% Seven Dust is used on all types of poultry, and on a lot of animals effectively for fleas, and does not harm most species, but I am sure you would know if it is not safe for rabbits.

If you are here for advice on how to properly care for your rabbit, you're in the right place.  If you're looking for ways to avoid paying actual money to provide proper care for your rabbit, then please look elsewhere.  This service does not replace the necessary veterinary care your rabbit needs and deserves.

If you are too tight with your money to take proper care of your rabbit, then please give him to someone who will be willing to do the right thing and provide proper, safe treatment to kill his fleas before they do serious damage to him.

I wish him good luck.

Dear Marlene,

DO NOT use Sevin dust.  It is not safe for rabbits.

I do not use Advantage, but you can find dosage information and more helpful information here:

Hope that helps.
