Cat Litter for Rabbit Trays

Question
Now, I know cat litter, especially the clumping, can be dangerous to rabbits if ingested. However, I have a cage with a tray underneath and am wondering if using cat litter would be okay then. They cannot get to the litter to eat it. So, is there any fumes that the combination of cat litter and rabbit urine produces?

Thanks!
Jessi

Answer
Dear Jessica,

Clay litter is okay if the rabbits can't come into contact with it.  But you'll find that pelleted sawdust is much cleaner and absorbe odor much more effectively.  We use Feline Pine, wood stove pellets, or pelleted horse bedding with excellent results.

Hope that helps.
