How to keep my rabbit happy

Question
Hello there!

I have just adopted a cute bunny rabbit but now I have lots of questions running..

1) Diet : I give little bunny lots of herbs to eat. Bunny loves parsely and coriander. Is this okay? Bunny does not eat the pellets that the pet store gave me. She eats it only as a last resort - i.e- if I am away at work and not back home in time to replenish the stock of greens. Is this okay for my bunny?

2) How to keep my bunny happy? I give her around 4-5 hrs play time every day. But I notice that bunny is more active only when me and my husband are around. If we put her in her play area which is away from the living room - she gets upset and sits in a corner as though she is sulking... What do I do? I have given her cardboard toys and nice tunnel sort of plaything that she is happy with but I can tell her that she is more active if we are close to her.
We  have no children so there is no jealousy involved....

3) Bunny's nails....now this is the first time I am ever having a pet that is different from the parrots I once had and I need advice on trimming her nails. Some of my friends say that a human nail cutter works fine - but I really want to be sure. I would be taking bunny to a vet tomorrow - this is her first visit to a doctor. But Bunny's nails are beginning to hurt me - so I am wondering I should trim/cut them first or shall I ask the vet's advice?

4) Litter training - I needs lots of advice here. Its been 3 days since bunny is at home - and she defecates everywhere. Her cage is big and I have designated an area that can serve as her private room -but bunny does it everywhere! Its even more harder to clean the place when she is left in her play room. She urinates against the walls and fecal matter is just about everywhere! I REALLY need your expert advice here!

Thank you so much for your time.

Looking forward to hear from  you.

Answer
Diet.  Unlimited hay is necessary for proper gut function - extremely critical.  Good Timothy hay or Orchard Grass hay - Oxbow is good, American Pet Diner is good.  Same with food pellets.  It's okay if she eats them last.  Rabbits eat what they like first.  They don't like everyhting the same.

2. Rabbits have down time, they aren't going to always be active.  they are up in the morning, resting in the afternoon, active in the evening, and resting at night.  They fit a person's working schedule very well because they generally rest when you're sleeping or working.  4-5 hours out playing with you is good.

Nails.  Have the vet show you how to trim them.  It often is easier to have two people doing it, one to hold bunny sitting in their lap on a pillow and the other focused on trimming.  You need a special nail trimmer, ask the vet.  They generally need to be trimmed once every 8 weeks.

Marking/bathroom.  It's not all just going everywhere.  She's only been there 3 days, she is marking territory and things as hers.  This is to be expected with a bunny in a new space.  Now if she is sexually mature (older than 6 months) her litter habits will go south due to large amounts of hormones.  So she'll need to be fixed by a good rabbit vet. Not all are so research, start here:

to find a House Rabbit Society recommended vet near you.

Also the best litter to use is hardwood wood stove fuel pellets.  Safe for bunny, easy to find, cheaper than anything else and easy to remove the soiled litter only and replace with new.  Find it at a Home Depot or other similar store.

also pick up the books I recommend in my profile info.  You can get any of them locally or online.
