Questionhi ma'am.. just had a 2 month old baby rabbit (just an ordinary breed).. i just wanted to know if it is ok to have my rabbit lying down on her back whenever i pet her... she seem relaxed and enjoyed it.. and sometimes even fall asleep and grinding her teeth (she also maybe dreaming as she sometimes jerk her feet like she's hopping around)... i place her on my palm and lean her against my body so she can feel secure, she usually stays in that position around 15mins max.. and whenever she woke up, she will go back to her cage and she will either poop or urinate.. i'm not very familiar with rabbits and i'm a bit worried bec i'm from the Philippines.. and i couldn't find a rabbit savvy vet in our place... i read some articles on the internet and this is my only way of learning how to properly take care of my pet..i just don't know if i'm doing it right or it may affect her spine.. thank you for your time..
AnswerDear Beya,
As long as you support her back well to prevent injury, it's probably fine to hold her on her back if she enjoys it. But be aware that she can jump suddenly and injure herself, since being on her back is not a natural position for a rabbit. It's healthier for her to be on her belly/chest.
Be sure *never* to feed her or put anything in her mouth while she's on her back, as she could aspirate (inhale) and choke to death. I have seen this happen, and it is a terrible, tragic thing.
