Question
Are Rabbits suppose to have their feeding hours or can I leave their food in the cage the whole day?
How can I tell if my rabbit is a male or female?

Answer
Dear Sandra,

With my rabbits, I would give them a certain amount of food at a certain (general) time--say, in the afternoon. They would usually get the same amount, but they would not always eat it at once, so they would have some later. Some of the rabbits would eat it almost right away, and be fine food-wise until their next feeding. You just have to figure out when the best time for you to feed them is, and try to stick to it as best as you can. How much you feed depends on the size of the rabbit. I had some Holland Lops (about 4 pounds) that got 1/2 pellets a day, while the big mixed breed (probably over 6 pounds) got a whole cup. Some say that feeding a rabbit in the evening is good, because rabbits are active at night, and work off any extra weight they may have gained from chowing down on their dinner. Just set up some sort of feeding schedule, and try to stay with it. If it doesn't work, try something else until you find the best way.

Ahhh. Well, if you can find someone to show you how to tell if your rabbit is a male or female, that would probably be a lot more helpful than me describing it. Actually, even just finding a book on pet rabbit care that has photos of how to tell the difference might be helpful. Of course, an adult male is usually easy to distinguish, as he would have certain parts under the tail that a female would not have. Also, some adult males spray urine on people and walls, so that could be a sign that you have a male.

I hope this helps.
God Bless
