wild baby bunies found

Question
My dog found a baby bunnie nest and rolled a bunnie out. He looked un harmed so we put him back by pushing him in with a box top. We noticed the mom left some fur behind so we put that back over them and left them. I have not seen the mom come back and I wonder how long she stays away. The nest is in the middle of our yard under no trees or brush so I thought she would come back to move them to a more hidden spot but they are still ther this morning. Did we scare her off with our sent? Will she come back for them? How long will she stay away for?

Answer
Hi

Rabbits only feed their young once and sometimes twice a day.  She couldn't have moved them because rabbits teeth make it impossible for them to carry their young like a cat or dog.  If she thinks the babies are dead she wont come back.  If anything scared her away it was your dog and not you.  She very well may have come back during the night when you weren't watching.  It does seem strange that she isn't lurking in the area at least somewhere.

There isn't much you can do.  About the only thing you could do is contact a wildlife refuge farm is you have one in your area.  Many of them will pick up abandoned wildlife and nurse it back to health and release it back into the wild.  Unfortunately if you don't have any type of wildlife specialist in your area there isn't much else to do.

Sorry
