Question
hi there, just wondered if you can help.I have a giant continental rabbit who really isnt her self.we had 2 sister does and suddenley 2 weeks ago one of them sadly died, we dont know why, we have a feeling that it could be that when we had a BBQ a few weeks ago one of the guest gave them letiuce or something that they shouldnt have. But the biggest of the two bunnies sadly died a few days after the BBQ. they where both kept in the same cage and are both around 6 months old. Untill about 4 days ago the doe we have left really went off of her food and has not eaten a thing for about 3 days. She even got to the stage of not even getting up and even when we picked her up and moved her or even putting her in the garden she just laid down.
We then decided to bring her inside the house and put her in an indoor hutch to keep a closer eye on her she started to move about and come out of her cage and she has only manged to eat half an apple in the last two days, she is drinking water.
Anyway sorry for going on, but do you think she is just lonely and missing her sister or do you think there is something else wrong with her.i have got an appointment with the vet on tuesday but i dont want to loose her in the meantime.
thanx katy

Answer
Sorry for the short answer Katy, but I am in a rush today,

She is probably just missing her sister. Most rabbits go through this kind of grieving process, but without food in her stomach her GI tract could shut down from not being used enough. Force feeding her is the best thing for you to do. Mush up a bunch of pellets with water and use a medical syringe or a feeding syringe from a pet shop and give a couple drops at a time to make sure she gets her nutrients! VERY VERY important she gets something in her tummy.

She will likely grieve for a while, and after a while, you might consider getting a new bunny to be her husbunn. You also could have a necropsy done on the dead rabbit to see if you could prevent death in the other rabbit.

Keeping them inside is a good idea because most rabbits can die of fright when they are being watched by a cat, coyote or racoon. It is much safer and more healthy and more FUN for a rabbit to be housed indoors.

Just made sure she gets plenty of food before tuesday!
