Phantom pregnancy or not?

Question
Hi Sarah
I have 2 dwalf rabbits,( Peter(2yrs)who is a Polish,we've had for 18 months+
Daisy(2yrs)Who isa Netherland, we've had for 3 months. They have both lived happily together in same run and double hutch for the past 3 months. We hoped to have kits during this time. 8 days ago Daisy started to dig holes in run. Then 2 days later she began nesting and pulling her fur. I put Daisy in her own hutch and run next to Peters, placed nesting box in and darker room of hutch where she went on to make nest. It has now been 6 days and so far nothing?? She goes into nesting mode every time I put fresh straw down(not in her nest box) in the other side. She will pick up lots and pull a bit more fur.Ocassionally she will just drop the whole clump of straw. The box is so full and she is looking balder by the day.I'm not sure about feeling her tum as don't want to risk it in case she is pregnant. She can be nervous and wine when picked up. Should I take the nest box out and re-unite her with Peter? Or just wait a while longer? How long before we can try to mate them again? Many thanks and kindest regards Christi

Answer
hello cristina

it sounds to me that she most definalty is pregnant and as she has made the nest then the babies will be coming any minute now. please dont put the male and female back together, i would wait to see what happens. i would have a go feeling her tummy, she may let you feel her babies moving around, i would only try this once as it can cause alot of stress.

After she has weaned the babies i would wait atlest 2 months before putting the rabbits back together, any sooner and will be a high risk of still births.

good luck

sarah
