Question
QUESTION: Dear Dana,

Well over a week ago I noticed that my rabbit had something on the back of his neck that looked like a cut although I was not sure. A week went by and it did not go away. Two days ago I noticed that he had more of this red spots,in fact most of the his skin on the back of his neck was just getting red. As I kept searching his fur I saw something that looked like dandruff and some parts of his skin feel like small bumps or perhaps swollen? What worried me even more was when I saw some small black little bugs/lice(Whatever it is) walking on his skin. I've been doing some reading online and now I suppose my rabbit has fur mites? I also read that Revolution could take care of that. What do you suggest my rabbit has and if should I use Revolution, how should I apply it to his skin?

ANSWER: Dear Julio,

These sound more like fleas than mites, and it sounds as if your poor bunny is badly infested.  Please get him to a good rabbit vet:

www.rabbit.org/vets

for appropriate treatment.  Advantage will work, but DO NOT USE FRONTLINE, which can be deadly to rabbits.  For Revolution, you need a prescription.  Please see:

and get your bunny help ASAP.

Hope this helps.

QUESTION: Dear Dana,

Thank you for your response. Well turns out my rabbit has both mites and fleas. I obtained Revolution. The one for small puppies and kittens. It is 60mg/ml. My bunny is a dwarf, he weighs 2 lbs so I suppose that is slightly under 1kg. Now I just have a question, if the appropriate dose for a rabbit is 6mg/kg. Then I suppose for a 1kg rabbit, the dose would be 0.5ml.Now the one I bought has three small tubes of .25ml. I applied one tube today. If my math is correct, then I gave my rabbit half the dose I was supposed to. Do you think that will do anything? Or should I apply another tube and if so when should I apply it?

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Dear Julio,

It's hard to overdose with Revolution.  With the 60mg/ml solution, we give 0.1cc/kg, but you can actually give a bit more.  Better to give more and kill all the parasites than to kill off only the weakest ones, leaving the more resistant ones to survive and reproduce!

Hope this helps.
